How to create a VPN connection to 15 New Bridge Street on a Windows PC

In order to access some 15 New Bridge Street resources remotely (eg. shared drive and printers) you will need to set up a VPN (virtual private networking) connection.  This short note explains how to setup a VPN connection on a Windows PC

In order to access some 15 New Bridge Street resources remotely (eg. shared drive and printers) you will need to set up a VPN (virtual private networking) connection.  This short note explains how to setup a VPN connection on a Windows PC.  Note as the instructions vary between different versions of Windows, please refer to those specifically dealing with your version of Windows.

Windows 8

To create a new PPTP VPN connection in Windows 8:

  1. Press Windows key (between the left hand Ctrl and Alt) and X together to get a menu.
  2. Choose Control Panel.
  3. If in Category view, choose Network and Internet, then click Network and Sharing Center.
  4. If in Icon view, choose Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Click the "Set up a new connection or network" link.
  6. Choose "Connect to a workplace" from the list of connection options and click the Next button to continue.
  7. If asked "Do you want to use a connection that you already have?", ensure that "No, create a new connection" is chosen and click Next to continue.
  8. If asked "How to you want to connect?", click the "Use my Internet connection (VPN)" option.
  9. When prompted, type the address vpn.15nbs.com in the Internet address box.
  10. Type a name to be used for this connection (call it 15NBS VPN) and click Create to continue.  You can leave the other options as default.

Extra steps for Windows 8

  1. After following the above you should now be presented with a blue background and list of network connections.
  2. Ignore this and go to open the Control Panel - press the Windows key (between the bottom left Ctrl and Alt) and X together and choose Control Panel. Choose 'Network and Sharing Center' or if using Category view 'Network and Internet' then 'Network and Sharing Center'.
  3. Click on 'Change adapter settings'  Find the one you just created, right-click over it and choose Properties.
  4. Go to the Security Tab.  Change the Type of VPN to 'Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).  In the authentication section, press the option 'Allow these protocols' and make sure 'Microsoft CHAP Version 2' is ticked.  Click Ok.  You can then double-click on that connection and choose to connect it.
  5. Click on the network/wifi icon in the bottom right tray next to the clock for a list of connections.  Double click the one you just created.
  6. Type the username and password you have been given and click Ok.  By default it will remember these details.
  7. After a few moments, you should be successfully connected.
  8. If you ever want to connect again, just click on the network/wifi icon in the system tray bottom right and double-click the connection.

Windows 7

To create a new PPTP VPN connection in Windows 7:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. If in Category view, choose Network and Internet, then click Network and Sharing Center.
  4. If in Icon view, choose Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Click the "Set up a new connection or network" link.
  6. Choose "Connect to a workplace" from the list of connection options and click the Next button to continue.
  7. If asked "Do you want to use a connection that you already have?", ensure that "No, create a new connection" is chosen and click Next to continue.
  8. If asked "How to you want to connect?", click the "Use my Internet connection (VPN)" option.
  9. When prompted, type the IP address vpn.15nbs.com in the Internet address box.
  10. Type a name to be used for this connection (call it 15NBS VPN) and click Next to continue.
  11. Type the username and password you have been given and tick the "Remember this password" option.
  12. After a few moments, you should be successfully connected and can click the Close button.

Windows Vista

To create a new PPTP VPN connection in Windows Vista:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Choose "Connect To" - the Connect to a network window opens.
  3. Click the "Set up a connection or network" link in the bottom left of the window.
  4. Choose "Connect to a workplace" from the list of connection options (you may need to scroll down to find this item) and click the Next button to continue.
  5. If asked "Do you want to use a connection that you already have?", ensure that "No, create a new connection" is chosen and click Next to continue.
  6. If asked "How to you want to connect?", click the "Use my Internet connection (VPN)" option.
  7. When prompted, type the IP address vpn.15nbs.com in the Internet address box.
  8. Type a name to be used for this connection (call it 15NBS VPN) and click Next to continue.
  9. Type the username and password you have been given and tick the "Remember this password" option.
  10. After a few moments, you should be successfully connected and can click the Close button.

Windows XP

To create a new PPTP VPN connection in Windows XP:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Choose "Connect To".
  3. Choose "Show all connections" - the "Network Connections" Window opens.
  4. From the File menu, choose "New Connection..." - the New Connection Wizard starts.
  5. Click the Next button to continue.
  6. Choose "Connect to the network at my workplace" and click the Next button to continue.
  7. Choose "Virtual Private Network connection" and click Next to continue.
  8. Type a name to be used for this connection (call it 15NBS VPN) and click Next to continue.
  9. Choose "Do not dial the initial connection" option and click Next.
  10. Enter IP address as vpn.15nbs.com and click Next.
  11. Choose "My use only" and click Next.
  12. Tick the "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop" box and click the Finish button to create the connection.
  13. Once created the connection is automatically opened for your immediate use, if you do not wish to connect at this time, click the Cancel button.
  14. If you do wish to test or use your connection, type the username and password you have been given.
  15. Tick the "Save this user name and password..." box.
  16. Now click the Connect button.
  17. After a few moments, you should be successfully connected.
